  1. 0:00I begin with the sketch, making sure to use a consistent grid that aligns with the composition
  2. 0:04of the rest of our illustrations. Since our illustration system is based on the fluent
  3. 0:09design language, I take direct reference from the icons to maintain cohesion throughout the library.
  4. 0:15This sketching phase happens collaboratively on Figma, making the process both more efficient
  5. 0:20and enjoyable. Once I finalize the sketch, I transition to the 3D modeling phase, my favorite
  6. 0:26part. Using Cinema 4D, I model the components and render them in brush shift, ensuring that all
  7. 0:31elements such as lights, shadows, and camera positions are consistent across every illustration.
  8. 0:37I import the splines from our figma sketches and use the spline mask to create the main floor,
  9. 0:42using plane reflectors to achieve the characteristic scoop effect. I then model
  10. 0:47additional 3D shapes, balancing the scoops and shapes for legibility and balance.
  11. 0:51Next, I prepare the mask for render passes, which I'll use in the post-production phase
  12. 0:56to remove the background.
  13. 0:58This is where the real fun begins.
  14. 1:00By using materials from our asset library, I can play with colors and masks, art directing
  15. 1:05the final look to ensure it meets our vision.
  16. 1:08I really love to take my time in this process and create a lot of different options.
  17. 1:13And find the best look considering contrast and accessibility, always making sure the
  18. 1:18illustration looks beautiful.
  19. 1:20Making sure we can tackle all of the beautiful details like brush strokes and paint splashes
  20. 1:25we can achieve with 3D and make the illustrations a lot more tactile and human.
  21. 1:38After a few test renders, I create a dark mode version and proceed with the final render.
  22. 1:44In After Effects, I use a pre-made template to import the renders in EXR format.
  23. 1:48This template helps extract the background using the render passes generated earlier.
  24. 1:53I then add the final renders to our full library, ensuring everything aligns perfectly.
  25. 1:58And there you have it, the process of creating a beautiful fluent 3D illustration from sketch to final product.
