  8. 0:19What I love most is making sure developers like you feel delighted
  9. 0:23and inspired by the tools we build.
  10. 0:25Well, today, we're excited to give you a quick look
  11. 0:29at something new we've been experimenting with, the Codex CLI. Codex is a lightweight coding agent
  12. 0:35that can run directly from your command line. It can read and edit files, it can run commands
  13. 0:41securely, and you can really use it to build features or complete apps from scratch. But
  14. 0:46enough talk. To see that in action, I'm going to bring Fuad over for some live demos.
  15. 0:53Hey, hey. How's it going? Great. Hey everyone, I'm Fuad on the Agents Research Team and I'm so
  16. 0:58excited to share Codex with you all.
  17. 1:00Why don't you kick us off with maybe like a project that people might have seen before,
  18. 1:04let's say like OpenAI.fm that we use a quick demo app for our voice models.
  19. 1:09Yeah, let me go and pull up the website, OpenAI.fm.
  20. 1:12I think it's an open source repo, right?
  21. 1:13So I can just go ahead and clone that locally and fire up Codex.
  22. 1:16And so here we have Codex just running on my machine.
  23. 1:19The cool part is that it runs with any of our public models.
  24. 1:22And since I'm not that familiar with the code base,
  25. 1:24I'm just going to go and start off by asking it to explain this code base to me.
  26. 1:27And so what I'm looking at here on the screen is that you're using O3 that we just launched today.
  27. 1:32Yeah, you can actually use anything from 4.1 from a few days ago to O3 and O4 Mini today.
  28. 1:37And I think one really cool thing is as it's actually calling these tools, it's running commands.
  29. 1:41You can see it run the commands directly on your machine.
  30. 1:44So now we can see it put together this whole description.
  31. 1:47I can see that it described howable what OpenIFM is.
  32. 1:50It shows me the code architecture, that it's an XJS application.
  33. 1:54And finally, here's how I can actually run it.
  34. 1:55So I'm going to go ahead and run the development server.
  35. 1:58And did you have a use case in mind?
  36. 2:01Yeah, I mean, why don't we do something simple
  37. 2:02like dark mode, for instance?
  38. 2:03Like, I know developers always love dark mode,
  39. 2:05and maybe we can do something on top of that.

  41. 2:11This time, I'm going to run it in full auto mode.
  42. 2:13So what does that mean exactly, full auto?
  43. 2:15Now, it can also edit and run commands automatically.
  44. 2:18Got it.
  45. 2:18An important point there to make sure it still stays safe
  46. 2:21and secure is that when you run it in full auto mode,
  47. 2:23it's actually running network disabled
  48. 2:25and sandbox the directory that you ran it in.
  49. 2:27So it's perfectly safe for you to just be able to walk away,
  50. 2:30but it's really important for us to make sure
  51. 2:31that our users stay in control
  52. 2:32when you're actually running this on your own computer.
  53. 2:35That's great.
  54. 2:35It sounds like what we're talking,
  55. 2:37it's changing all the Tailwind CSS
  56. 2:39and making the changes we want.
  57. 2:41Yeah, so one of the nice things is that
  58. 2:42while I got this high level overview in one step,
  59. 2:45I can also have it go in and make very specific changes
  60. 2:47without actually having the context
  61. 2:49of where it's making those changes.
  62. 2:51So I think the nice part is that you as a developer
  63. 2:53can actually use this to both understand the code and actually make edits to it pretty seamlessly.
  64. 2:58Now that it's done, I'm going to go ahead and open up the OpenEye to FM. I can open it up locally
  65. 3:03and boom, we can see it in dark mode. That's amazing. You know, that's one example where it's
  66. 3:07an existing code base, but maybe try something new. Well, now that we've gotten familiar with
  67. 3:12Codex with this one example, I thought, why don't we create something a bit more fun
  68. 3:16from scratch this time? A little bit like Vibe Coding, complete app from nothing.
  69. 3:20Sure.
  70. 3:21Is there one that you like in particular on Mac OS, for instance?
  71. 3:24Okay, yeah.
  72. 3:25You know, when I was a kid, I used to go to the Apple store and play with Photo Booth.
  73. 3:29I don't know.
  74. 3:29I don't have to do this.
  75. 3:31So yeah, let's actually pull out maybe one of the filters in Photo Booth.
  76. 3:35Okay, yeah.
  77. 3:35How about this page of filters?
  78. 3:37So are you able to screenshot the app and just tell Codex that you want it put on the
  79. 3:43web?
  80. 3:44Exactly.
  81. 3:44So I'm trying to grab a screenshot of Photo Booth and I'm just going to pass it in.
  82. 3:49This time I'm going to put it in full auto mode.
  83. 3:53And it is the first reason about the image.
  84. 3:56It's going to understand what it is even looking at.
  85. 3:58Okay, great. It understands that it's a screenshot of macOS.
  86. 4:01That's not fitting, yeah.
  87. 4:02And now I'm going to tell it, re-implement this in a single page HTML.
  88. 4:08And maybe I want to say, use the web camera API and make sure it's in landscape mode.
  89. 4:18And so now it'll just go off and give that context
  90. 4:20about the screenshot of what I wanted.
  91. 4:21This could be a screenshot of Photobooth.
  92. 4:24It could be a screenshot of Figma design.
  93. 4:26It could be a lot of different things.
  94. 4:27I've used it in different contexts
  95. 4:29where I've drawn very low fidelity mockups.
  96. 4:31And then just kind of give in codecs,
  97. 4:33here's this context that I want, and then go off
  98. 4:35and make the changes.
  99. 4:36And I don't have to give it any additional context,
  100. 4:38any additional direction.
  101. 4:39It'll just go off, think for a while.
  102. 4:41You can see its chain of thought reasoning
  103. 4:42as it's thinking through the problem, both what commands
  104. 4:45it's running and also what its thoughts are.
  105. 4:47And now finally here we see the page.
  106. 4:50Now if I go ahead and open that page in my browser,
  107. 4:52I can go ahead and see that it created this photo booth.
  108. 4:56And boom, we have...
  109. 4:57Oh my god.
  110. 4:57Look how cool that is.
  111. 4:58It's exactly the same.
  112. 4:59Isn't that amazing?
  113. 5:00That's so cool.
  114. 5:01And I'm sure you could have prompted your way to get such a result,
  115. 5:04but just like one screenshot
  116. 5:06and the model understood exactly what you wanted to build.
  117. 5:08We didn't have to open a code editor this entire time.
  118. 5:11It was just all on our terminal.
  119. 5:12And some of them all kick off multiple of these in parallel
  120. 5:15and just let them, you know, one explaining the code base to me,
  121. 5:17one making some changes and it's just pretty magical to see it all come together.
  122. 5:20That's amazing. So it was just a quick look at some of the features that we have in Codex.
  123. 5:24We've seen how it can read and edit files directly, it can run commands very securely,
  124. 5:29and you have different knobs in order to pick the mode that you're the most comfortable with.
  125. 5:34But my personal favorite feature is really that one, like the multi-modal reasoning. That's really
  126. 5:38the true magic of those reasoning models. You just feed it a piece of paper on a sketch or
  127. 5:43something and boom you have code being written for you.
  128. 5:46Do you want to share anything about like one more thing?
  129. 5:49Yeah, there's always one more thing.
  130. 5:50We're really excited to actually share Codex with you.
