- 0:02We're here in the Salish Sea, which is critical habitat for southern resident killer whales.
- 0:10They are a critically endangered population. There are only about 75 of them left.
- 0:17They have a very unique and identifiable culture,
- 0:24both in terms of their vocal repertoire and their behaviors.
- 0:31Marine mammals rely an awful lot on sound underwater for basic life functions,
- 0:36everything from navigating and finding their prey.
- 0:41They've been listed as endangered since 2005,
- 0:43and one of the big barriers to their recovery is acoustic pollution, or underwater noise.
- 0:53When a cargo ship is moving through the Salish Sea,
- 0:56It creates a huge amount of underwater noise,
- 1:01including in the frequencies that the orcas are using for echolocation and communication.
- 1:05They need to put more energy into their calls, and also their ability to navigate and hunt becomes less efficient.
- 1:12One of the ways that we make a cargo ship quieter is by having them slow down.
- 1:17So when they slow down, when they know orcas are present, they're reducing their underwater noise by up to 50%.
- 1:25How do we create some sort of an autonomous system that gives us the data that we need
- 1:29to be sure that we know when the whales are there in the timelines that we needed to the shipping
- 1:36industry? The communications acoustics buoy that'll have our underwater microphones which we'll be
- 1:43listening in and then both our processors on the bottom and Microsoft's processors on the top will
- 1:49be running on the edge in real time. So they'll be analyzing all the data that's coming in and
- 1:53listening for whales.
- 2:03Dude, that's perfect. That sounds great.
- 2:06As the sound wave passes that hydrophone, they'll send those data back through the cell modem back to our cloud.
- 2:14And on the cloud, we'll each do our own processing.
- 2:17That's where the Microsoft team will be saying, this fits into the pattern of this is killer whale-like,
- 2:21this is humpback-like, and this is ship-like.
- 2:25From there, we'll start then passing those notifications off
- 2:28automatically to the Whale Report Alert system.
- 2:31When we're better able to detect whales,
- 2:34we can give mariners more accurate information
- 2:36about when it's time to slow down for whales.
- 2:41The problem that we're trying to solve here in San Juan
- 2:43is a problem that we have across the world.
- 2:46It's impossible for our conservationists to listen
- 2:48to every one of these hours worth of data
- 2:50and try to classify.
- 2:52These AI models can do that for them at scale.
- 2:58This population is hanging in the balance,
- 3:02and I'm not willing to give up.
- 3:05With a bit more effort and a bit more care, we can get there.
