  1. 0:00Now that we understand how AI models work at a high level, let's dive into something
  2. 0:03that will help you understand both how these models think and how much they cost to use.
  3. 0:09And that's tokens.
  4. 0:18You can think about tokens kind of like the words an AI model actually understands.
  5. 0:23But here's the thing, they're not quite the same as the words that you or I would use.
  6. 0:28just like your computer doesn't actually understand
  7. 0:31the letter A, but instead works with binary,
  8. 0:34like ones and zeros.
  9. 0:35AI models don't work directly with words
  10. 0:38like hello or world either.
  11. 0:40They break everything down into smaller chunks
  12. 0:42called tokens.
  13. 0:44For example, if we look at the OpenAI tokenizer,
  14. 0:46we can see how their models take text
  15. 0:49and turn them into tokens.
  16. 0:50So we could type and say, hello world,
  17. 0:53and you could see the color coding down below
  18. 0:55showing how that's broken into two tokens.
  19. 0:58But if I actually paste in a larger sentence here,
  20. 1:01we can see hello might be one token,
  21. 1:04but the word understanding is actually multiple tokens.
  22. 1:07And parts of words or punctuation and spaces
  23. 1:10can also become their own tokens.
  24. 1:12The reason this is important
  25. 1:13is because tokens are how models are priced.
  26. 1:17You pay per token, not per word or character.
  27. 1:21And this is also how many folks
  28. 1:23measure the speed of a model.
  29. 1:24So a faster model is going to generate more tokens per second or a faster tokens per second,
  30. 1:30which is how fast you're getting a response back from talking to a model.
  31. 1:34So let's talk about pricing first, since this is going to impact how much you spend when you're using AI models to do coding.
  32. 1:41If we keep this analogy going that AI models are kind of like these super powerful APIs,
  33. 1:48tokens are the units that we can use to measure and charge for the input and output traffic.
  34. 1:54So there's two different types of tokens we're working with.
  35. 1:56One is the input tokens, which include everything that you send to the model,
  36. 2:00like your prompt and the existing conversation,
  37. 2:04and then output tokens, which is what the model generates back to you.
  38. 2:08Now, output tokens typically cost more than input tokens
  39. 2:11because generating this new content requires a bit more computational work
  40. 2:16than just processing what you sent.
  41. 2:18Have you ever noticed how ChatGPT and other AI bots
  42. 2:21seem to type their responses in almost real time?
  43. 2:24It's not just the visual effect.
  44. 2:26It's actually how the models work under the hood.
  45. 2:29These models are generating tokens
  46. 2:31one at a time in a sequence.
  47. 2:33They're predicting the next token,
  48. 2:35and then they use that prediction
  49. 2:37to help predict the next token after that,
  50. 2:39and so on and so forth.
  51. 2:41This is why you see the responses
  52. 2:42kind of come in word by word, or rather token by token.
  53. 2:46Now, these responses can stream back to you.
  54. 2:49This is great because you don't have to wait
  55. 2:50for the entire response to finish,
  56. 2:52which could take minutes and you can go interrupt the model
  57. 2:56if it starts to go off track.
  58. 2:58AI tools like Cursor also can use a number of techniques
  59. 3:01to optimize the information that gets sent
  60. 3:03to the underlying models.
  61. 3:05For example, Cursor can automatically cache parts
  62. 3:08of the prompt that you use repeatedly,
  63. 3:10especially in larger conversations,
  64. 3:12that can help you save money on the tokens used.
  65. 3:15Part of understanding this is understanding what context is.
  66. 3:19So let's dive into that in our next lesson.
