- 0:00If a PR is never merged, that code never finds its way to the code base.
- 0:05And if that PR contains security updates, well, now we've got tech debt.
- 0:09Managing library updates can be tedious at times.
- 0:13The exact type of tedium an automated task can handle.
- 0:17Let's see how we can use automations in the Copilot app to offload that tedium.
- 0:26An automation is a task you set up once so Copilot can run it again and again. You describe the task
- 0:33one time and it keeps working without you. So instead of opening, reading, and triaging these
- 0:39types of PRs manually every single day, let's describe that chore one time and let Copilot
- 0:44take it off our plate. Creating an automation starts with two things, a name and a trigger.
- 0:51For my name, I'm going to call this daily dependbot triage.
- 0:56And then for the trigger, I can have this as manual,
- 1:00which is great if I want to kick this off myself,
- 1:02maybe while I'm testing an idea,
- 1:04hourly, daily, and weekly to run this on a regular schedule.
- 1:08And then issue created,
- 1:09which will automatically run when an issue is created
- 1:13rather than watching the clock.
- 1:15You'll notice that I'm going to leave this set to be 9 a.m.
- 1:18just before I typically start work.
- 1:21I can choose to run this in the cloud if I want,
- 1:23or let it run on my local system.
- 1:26And then I've got my prompt,
- 1:27where I can describe in natural language,
- 1:29just like I was creating a session,
- 1:31what it is that I want this automation to do.
- 1:34Review the open Dependabot PRs,
- 1:37group them by risk,
- 1:39call out the ones that are safe to merge
- 1:44and are minor bumps,
- 1:47as opposed to the bigger version updates.
- 1:51Ensure each one's CI is passing
- 1:55and give me a short summary of the best next steps.
- 2:03I'm going to select the project here
- 2:05to point this at my Tailspin toys,
- 2:08which is where I have all of those Dependabot PRs
- 2:12that I'm currently managing.
- 2:14And then down below, I can hit create.
- 2:17Now, I don't want to wait until 9 a.m. for this to actually run,
- 2:20so I'll choose Create and Run, which will kick off this job right now,
- 2:26so that way I can see it in action.
- 2:29Copilot will go off, read through all of those open Dependabot PRs,
- 2:33and come back with exactly what I asked for,
- 2:36the safe patch and minor bumps grouped together,
- 2:39and the riskier versions flagged for a closer look later on.
- 2:43A chore that used to scatter my whole morning is now a single organized summary.
- 2:48In my case, it looks like we need to update to a newer version of Astro,
- 2:52something that's beyond just bumping the version number.
- 2:55Fortunately, I can take the results of this automation
- 2:59and start a new session right here inside of Copilot app.
- 3:04So let's ask Copilot, let's update to Astro 6.
- 3:11And again, just like before, off it goes using the context that it has right here.
- 3:18Every automation run shows up right here inside of automation.
- 3:23So that way I can always see what ran, when it ran, and exactly what it did.
- 3:29And if something doesn't look quite right, it's right there for me to review.
- 3:34So my automations never feel like a black box working behind my back.
- 3:39With automations, I can take a recurring chore, describe it once, pick a trigger, and let co-pilot handle it.
- 3:46My advice is to start exactly like we did here.
- 3:49Pick a boring task, the kind of things that you already kind of do on autopilot, and hand it to the app.
- 3:56And then spend that attention on what actually needs your judgment.
- 4:01You can learn more in the rest of the series and at gh.io slash app.
