  3. 0:04hey, if you open this up, we will help you build it.
  4. 0:07And so today we're open sourcing Warp.
  5. 0:15All right, so what's actually changing today?
  6. 0:18Warp's now open source.
  7. 0:19We're going to be building with the community,
  8. 0:22and it's a system where agents are doing a lot of the heavy lifting.
  9. 0:25What that looks like to me is a combination of people
  10. 0:29providing intent, people providing taste, people providing guidance, and agents doing a bunch of
  11. 0:36the heavy lifting around creating plans and actually writing code and making sure that code
  12. 0:40is good and verified. We have people who are super passionate. We have people who I know will
  13. 0:48contribute because they've said to us many times, hey, if you open this up, we will help you build
  14. 0:53it. I think one of the things I've really learned building developer product over the last five
  15. 0:58years is that developers want choice, developers want customization, they want to be able to make
  16. 1:03these products and workbenches their own and we think making Warp open is a huge step in that
  17. 1:08direction. This is obvious at this point but every few days, weeks, months the whole landscape is
  18. 1:15changing. So open source is part of that. It's helpful to be open source but it's also just
  19. 1:20like a company philosophy at this point where we're trying to lean into the broader ecosystem and
  20. 1:25support it. When we first launched Warp, we launched it in private beta and there was a lot of discussion on Hacker News like, you know, open source it, you're not going to open source it. And so the thought at the beginning actually was always, yeah, I think we'll open source it. But what we would like to have in place before we do that is a working business model. You know, we're five years after we initially put out a preview here, but it's it is kind of cool to look back and that we've actually now done it. Let's talk a little bit about
  21. 1:55the contribution flow.
  22. 1:56For sure.
  23. 1:57It's pretty simple, actually.
  24. 1:58You start with opening a GitHub issue.
  25. 2:00When an issue comes in, Oz is going to triage it.
  26. 2:03If the warp team thinks it's something that we should build
  27. 2:06and it's hard to build, Oz is going to do the planning
  28. 2:08and speccing for it.
  29. 2:10Oz will then actually write the code.
  30. 2:11Oz will code review itself.
  31. 2:14Oz will do the verification.
  32. 2:16And all this is done in conjunction with the warp team
  33. 2:18and the community.
  34. 2:19But a lot of the stuff that would have just taken a ton
  35. 2:22of like actual time to do is now going to be done by Oz, which is super cool.
  36. 2:29What has me most excited is that I think this can be really, if it works well, a model of how
  37. 2:34software is built in the future. An open, customizable, thriving ecosystem is going to
  38. 2:39be one of the ways that you can build a really valuable, lasting piece of software. You need that
  39. 2:44in a world where the actual cost of creating code has gone close to zero and it's trending to that.
  40. 2:51the real value comes from people working together to build some project where you know you couldn't do it on your own.
  41. 3:00Here's how you can get involved. So you can go to our GitHub repo and see how to directly contribute and we would love that.
  42. 3:07You can just give us issues and you can do that by filing issues on GitHub or as you're using warp you can hit slash feedback
  43. 3:14which is a new skill that we've added which will trigger the agent to gather info and
  44. 3:19open an issue. If you just want to observe what's happening and you're just a warp fan, you want to
  45. 3:24see how this new open source machine works, you can go to build.warp.dev and you can see what all
  46. 3:29of the agents that are building warp are doing at any time. It's pretty cool. You can see the ones
  47. 3:34that are planning, the ones that are coding. You can literally click in and see the trace of the
  48. 3:39agent conversation as it builds some piece of warp. You know, this is a new way of building software
  49. 3:43and so we're really excited to see what we can build together.
