- 0:00Watching the World Cup is great, but I always thought it would be so awesome if the game could happen on top of my desk.
- 0:06So I built an AR match dashboard that turns my desk into a little World Cup command center.
- 0:11I can still watch the game on the broadcast, but I can view the stats right here to add a little excitement.
- 0:18And today, I'm going to show you how I built it.
- 0:24Soccer is a spatial game.
- 0:25Players have positions, attackers have directions, momentum moves from one side to the other all the time,
- 0:31which I can all view on the broadcast.
- 0:34But when you want some extra context during a match,
- 0:37that usually means digging through pages, player stats, roles, numbers.
- 0:41It's not really intuitive and it kind of separates you from the game.
- 0:44I wanted to make that context feel more immersive,
- 0:48a match dashboard that I can look down on and view all the stats while looking at the field.
- 0:53To make this work, I needed to solve two problems.
- 0:56First, the AR view had to be stable on my desk.
- 0:59I explored a few platforms, but I settled on building an iOS app and viewing it from my iPad,
- 1:05simply because the stable AI capabilities it provides, and I also didn't own a Vision Pro.
- 1:11Building AR apps for iOS is great because it provides accurate spatial tracking and
- 1:16various features that you need to build an AR application, and it exposes them through simple
- 1:22APIs. Second, I need to fetch the game data, store it, and broadcast it as real-time data.
- 1:28For this, I use SportMonks API and Superbase. Superbase fetches the game data using edge
- 1:34functions, and I store it in my tables, and I also broadcast them over Superbase real-time.
- 1:41I started by chatting with Codex to get the first version of the iOS AR scene working.
- 1:46iOS has amazing surface detection and general AR capability,
- 1:50so creating a nice saga field that looks stable on my desk was fairly easy.
- 1:56Then it was time to add the backend.
- 1:59I, as in Codex, wrote the super-based edge functions that caused the SportMonks API,
- 2:04pulls in all the match data, players data, all the stats,
- 2:07clean it up, and store it in the tables so that our app can read it.
- 2:12And after that, I added a entry screen, a dashboard where I can browse all the games from the finals tournament.
- 2:18I can pick a match, tap it, and it'll open it up on my desk and play back the entire game at 60x speed.
- 2:26And yes, it still hurts to watch Japan lose against Brazil on my desk.
- 2:34What I love about this experience is you can get closer into the scoreboard or players.
- 2:39you can tilt it, the way it looks more dynamic and exciting,
- 2:43and you have all the freedom to make it your own.
- 2:47A normal app makes you scroll.
- 2:48This is what makes you go into the actual game.
- 2:51Honestly, the whole reason why I wanted to create this project
- 2:54was because I wanted to do something cool with AR and World Cup that was going on,
- 2:59and of course, Super Bass.
- 3:00And I'm really glad with the quality that it turns out.
- 3:04And I think it just shows the potential of what you can create using AI, AR, Superbase,
- 3:11all these cool technologies that we have today.
- 3:13So here's what works right now.
- 3:15The app can load soccer match data from Superbase and present it inside this AR experience.
- 3:22And that's how FIRE got with this project.
- 3:24But I'm sure there's other ways we could make the experience richer.
- 3:27Maybe there's an API that provides real-time player positions
- 3:30and we could actually move the player markers around.
- 3:33Maybe there's other advanced stats that we should be displaying.
- 3:36Maybe there's a better way of visualizing some of the stats to, I don't know, appear on the field or something.
- 3:43Possibilities are endless.
- 3:44And with the help of these tools, AI and Superbase and other tools that are appearing,
- 3:51the boundary of entry is only getting lower.
- 3:55Anybody can build awesome AR apps that was hard to build just a few years ago.
- 4:01So if you have the passion for it, you should just start building.
- 4:05And let's all sit back, relax, and enjoy how the World Cup plays out.
