  1. 0:00Until now, using generative video models meant that you were locked into 8-bit, highly compressed
  2. 0:05H.264 files.
  3. 0:07If you try to push a grade on any one of those, it falls apart pretty quickly, with banding
  4. 0:11in the skies, crushed shadows, and dare I say it, a codec that no colorist wants to
  5. 0:15ever see on a delivery spec.
  6. 0:17If your pipeline runs on ProRes and EXRs, generated footage was kind of always the odd
  7. 0:21file out.
  8. 0:22But that just changed.
  9. 0:23Today, I'm excited to announce Runway Ruby, a new way to generate or convert videos into
  10. 0:2916-bit EXR image sequences or 10-bit and 12-bit AGVC videos directly from any available video
  11. 0:35model inside of Runway. VT2020 Color PQ or HLG in either ProRes or H.265. Our research team has
  12. 0:43made it possible to do this for any SDR video, live action or generated, perfect for professional
  13. 0:48operations looking to get more out of their video files. If you're delivering to a streaming service,
  14. 0:53HDR really isn't a nice-to-have, it's usually on the spec sheet, and until now,
  15. 0:57generated footage couldn't even pass QC without a conversion step somewhere outside of your pipeline.
  16. 1:03But now, it can live there natively. The 16-bit EXR sequences drop straight into your editor or
  17. 1:08compositor as floating point frames, so they hold up under keying, relighting, and heavy comp work
  18. 1:13the same way a camera plate would. The 10 or 12-bit ProRes files cut natively alongside of your camera
  19. 1:18originals, and give your colorist real headroom to push a grade instead of babysitting an 8-bit
  20. 1:23file.
  21. 1:23Converting from SDR to HDR means changing three distinct things about your video files.
  22. 1:29Number one is the bit depth.
  23. 1:30Going from 8-bit to 10-bit plus, so you get four times the tonal steps per channel and
  24. 1:35the extra headroom to avoid banding.
  25. 1:3716-bit if you're exporting to an EXR sequence.
  26. 1:39Number two is color gamut.
  27. 1:41Moving from Rec.709 to BT.2020, which unlocks a dramatically wider range of reds, greens,
  28. 1:47and blues than SDR could ever touch.
  29. 1:49And number three, the transfer function.
  30. 1:51The actual math that maps pixel values to brightness.
  31. 1:55Swapping out SDR's gamma curve for something built to describe a display that can hit a
  32. 1:59thousand nits or more instead of just a hundred.
  33. 2:01If you skip any one of these, you don't have real HDR, you have SDR wearing a costume.
  34. 2:07But once you're fully in HDR territory, you've got two transfer functions that you
  35. 2:11can choose from.
  36. 2:12Number one is PQ.
  37. 2:13It's absolute.
  38. 2:14Every pixel value mapping to one specific fixed brightness, all the way up to a theoretical
  39. 2:1910,000 nits. Max CLL and Max Fall tell the display the brightest single pixel and the
  40. 2:25brightest average frame it should ever expect to see. Or number two, HLG, which works in
  41. 2:30the opposite way. It's relative, scene referred, and backward compatible with SDR's displays
  42. 2:35right out of the box. And because it's relative, it doesn't need any static metadata to go
  43. 2:40along with it. Some runway models like Gen 4.5 or Aleph 2.0 can generate these files natively,
  44. 2:45or you can convert any video, generated or otherwise, inside of the Runway app directly
  45. 2:50via tool mode, apps, workflows, or the Runway Dev Portal.
  46. 2:55To quickly check your outputs, open the video file in VLC, then go to Tools, then Codec Information,
  47. 3:01and check the Transfer function field. It should say PQ or HLG, depending on which one you chose.
  48. 3:07SDR to HDR conversion is available to anyone with a max plan or higher right now,
  49. 3:13directly inside of Runway,
  50. 3:14and we're super excited for you to get your hands on it.
