  1. 0:00Every day, people type things into AI tools they wouldn't broadcast publicly at work.
  2. 0:05Medical questions, money worries, drafts of emails they're nervous to send.
  3. 0:10So it's fair to ask, what does an AI actually know about me?
  4. 0:13Does it remember what I said last week?
  5. 0:16Is someone reading my chats?
  6. 0:17Will I get ads based on what I just asked?
  7. 0:20I'm Zoe, and I work on the education team here at Anthropic, the company that makes Claude.
  8. 0:24Let's walk through what happens when you share information with AI.
  9. 0:27We hope this can be helpful to you regardless of which AI you work with, whether that's Claude or others.
  10. 0:33Just keep in mind, policies vary between providers, so always confirm the specifics for whichever tool you choose.
  11. 0:39Here's a way to think about it. You should be able to see and control what your AI provider retains about you.
  12. 0:45What matters is where your data goes, why, and how long it sticks around.
  13. 0:50Some of what you share lasts only as long as the conversation.
  14. 0:54Some of it persists to improve your experience with the product.
  15. 0:57A little of it could improve the experience for others.
  16. 1:00At every point along the way, there should be a setting that puts you in control.
  17. 1:04So let's take one detail you might share and ask, what happens to it when you close the chat?
  18. 1:10Say you're shopping for a birthday gift and you tell an AI,
  19. 1:12My partner is really into hiking and we live near Denver. Any ideas?
  20. 1:16For the rest of that conversation, the AI is working with those details.
  21. 1:20your partner, their love of hiking, and your proximity to Denver.
  22. 1:24As for where these details go and what happens to them,
  23. 1:27your data can be used in different ways.
  24. 1:29The first use is the conversation itself.
  25. 1:32On its own, the model only holds context for the duration of a conversation.
  26. 1:37Open a fresh chat tomorrow and the conversation starts blank.
  27. 1:41On its own, the model has no idea what your partner likes.
  28. 1:44Your control here is simple.
  29. 1:46It only knows what you choose to put in front of it.
  30. 1:48The second use is the product's memory.
  31. 1:51Many AI tools save details from one chat to the next.
  32. 1:54And this isn't the model itself remembering you.
  33. 1:57These are details saved into your account
  34. 1:59that the model has access to when you start a new chat.
  35. 2:03Depending on the product, this may be on by default
  36. 2:05or something you switch on.
  37. 2:07So next week, the tool might incorporate your partner's love of hiking
  38. 2:11into a conversation about brainstorming fun weekend plans.
  39. 2:14In most products, you can edit it, clear it, or turn off memory entirely.
  40. 2:19The third use is the provider's own systems.
  41. 2:22Providers' privacy policies often allow for data use in cases like keeping the service running,
  42. 2:28safety and abuse review, fixing bugs, research, and commercial purposes like serving ads,
  43. 2:34and where applicable, improving the model.
  44. 2:36At this point, close the chat and your information is kept with the provider.
  45. 2:40How that access is controlled depends on the provider, so the reliable move is to check the privacy policy and data retention settings.
  46. 2:48The fourth use is training future models.
  47. 2:51Some providers may use conversations to improve the next version of a model.
  48. 2:55Personal data is generally removed from chats before they're used for training, and your conversations aren't stored in the model to be read back to other users.
  49. 3:04But close your chat. Your detail isn't really your exact words anymore. It's a pattern.
  50. 3:09Where providers train future models on conversations, many let you opt out.
  51. 3:13So what does this mean in practice?
  52. 3:15The reassuring part is that you have control.
  53. 3:18A provider's privacy policy describes how your data is used,
  54. 3:21and you can check the product settings for additional controls.
  55. 3:24At Anthropic, we work to make those choices easy to understand.
  56. 3:28When your organization brings in Claude, model training is off by default,
  57. 3:32so there's nothing you need to do.
  58. 3:33A few habits make this easier.
  59. 3:36One, spend a few minutes reviewing your settings.
  60. 3:38Memory, chat history, connected apps,
  61. 3:41and the training toggle typically live
  62. 3:43in your account or privacy settings.
  63. 3:45That's where you'll find out what's being saved
  64. 3:47and how it's being used.
  65. 3:49Two, share based on your own comfort, not a blanket rule.
  66. 3:52Before you share something, think about its uses
  67. 3:55across the chat, the product saved memory,
  68. 3:57or a future training run.
  69. 3:58Three, leave out what you aren't comfortable with.
  70. 4:01If you're using an AI to reword an email,
  71. 4:04the AI may not need the recipient's real name
  72. 4:06to do a good job.
  73. 4:07Swap in placeholders and you'll get the same value.
  74. 4:10Four, match the product to the sensitivity.
  75. 4:13For everyday use cases, the consumer version is usually fine.
  76. 4:17For confidential or regulated data at work,
  77. 4:20look for business or enterprise plans.
  78. 4:22These often come with different data handling terms,
  79. 4:25which you can confirm in the product's documentation.
  80. 4:27So what does AI know about you?
  81. 4:30In the moment and at baseline,
  82. 4:32it's whatever you've put in the conversation.
  83. 4:34Beyond that, how durable it becomes depends on the product's defaults and the choices you make in settings.
  84. 4:40A few minutes upfront plus thoughtful engagement ensures that you stay in control of your information.
